OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Oswego city firefighters and state Department of Environmental Conservation officers rescued a bald eagle hanging from a branch over the Oswego River after someone noticed it appeared injured.

“Vicki Robozzi Gosek called the DEC after watching the eagle since Thursday and noticed it was acting strange and must be injured,” according to an IHeartOswego Facebook post on Sunday.

DEC Officers Greg Maneeley and Matthew Foster then called the Oswego Fire Department to help with the rescue.

Oswego Fire Lt. Drew Montalbano, Firefighter Don LaBarge and DEC Officer Foster took a small boat from the west side of the river to get to the bald eagle, while other firefighters went to the east side of the river where the eagle was perched, according to the Facebook post.

The bald eagle sat firmly on a large branch hanging over the east side of Oswego River, across from St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Rescuers had to cut away a blanket from the eagle’s talons before they could bring it back to shore. DEC officers then brought the bald eagle to someone who could help rehabilitate it.

The river rescue was shared more than 120 times within hours of IHeartOswego posting the heroic tale.

“Way to go Oswego Fire Department and NYS DEC!,” the post read. “Many thanks to Vicki Robozzi Gosek for her ‘eagle eye!!’”
