NEW YORK — A veteran firefighter died from 9/11-related cancer last week.
FDNY firefighter Robert Newman, 70, responded to the Sept. 11 attacks before retiring in 2005; he served the department for 40 years.
“Newman is the fourth firefighter who has passed away due to a 9/11-related illness this year,” James Slevin, the New York Uniformed Firefighters Association president, said in a statement. “Due to the devastating 9/11 attacks on our nation, numerous New York City firefighters have been getting sick and dying in high numbers due to cancers and other diseases caused by breathing the toxic air at the World Trade Center.”
Newman also served in the military during the Vietnam War.
Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday.
