Fla. crews save 10-month-old from house fire

Macollvie Jean-francois
The Orlando Sentinel

LAUDERHILL, Fla. — Firefighters rescued a 10-month-old from a burning home set afire by a pot left on the kitchen stove early Sunday, a Lauderhill Fire-Rescue spokesman said.

The blaze broke out about 2:30 a.m. in the 500 block of Northwest 35th Terrace. Courtney Davis, who was staying at a home behind the burnt house, said a little girl came knocking on the door about that time, saying her house was on fire.

Davis said he and his cousins rushed out, saw flames and smoke billowing out of the house and called 911.

In the home's backyard, they saw an older woman sitting on a chair with another child, Davis said. She told them an infant was still inside.

"They were like, 'Go, get the baby, go get the baby," Davis, 18, said.

Firefighters arrived while he was still on the phone with dispatch, Davis said.

The child was placed on a respirator, then transported for Jackson Memorial Hospital, fire-rescue spokesman Lt. Jeff Levy said. An update on her condition was not available.
