CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. — A Battle Creek firefighter passed out Wednesday, July 31, while searching for potential victims in a house fire.

Firefighters called a “mayday” and carried the firefighter outside. The firefighter regained consciousness before going to the hospital and was later released to recover at home.

The fire was reported at 5:08 p.m. at 204 Hunter Street. Once on scene, firefighters were told that people could be trapped inside as heavy smoke billowed from the single-story house.

Firefighters were conducting a search for victims and trying to control the fire when the firefighter passed out.

No one was in the house.

The fire caused an estimated $65,000 in damage, primarily to the kitchen and nearby rooms. The cause is under investigation.
