Portland Fire & Rescue responds to hospital Hazmat incident

At approx. 17:00 Monday, Portland Fire & Rescue responded to assist with decontaminating two Clackamas County firefighters and two AMR paramedics at Portland Providence Medical Center. This incident was initiated in Clackamas County when firefighters found an adult male in a hotel room unconscious. Three liquids were found on the floor of the hotel room leading to fears of possible chemical contamination. The liquids were later identified as ammonia, bleach and Drano. A small (Hibachi) type barbeque was also found burning in the room. The individual was transported by AMR with the assistance of Clackamas County firefighters to Providence Medical Center.
Upon arrival at the Providence emergency room the hospitals isolation and decontamination procedures were initiated. The Clackamas County firefighters and AMR paramedics had no medical complaints but were decontaminated and evaluated as a precaution. The patient regained consciousness in the emergency room and medical personnel are trying to learn why he was unconscious. Two additional firefighters were transported from the scene in Clackamas County to O.H.S.U. for medical evaluation.
